Losing Autonomy

Some thoughts from Andy Partington’s “Hope In Addiction” compiled by David Vraza MA.

The popular culture uses the word addiction to cover several ideas. We use it negatively to convey a sense of slavery to something. Other times we use it positively to describe a sense of passion or commitment — something exciting that can grab and hold our interest. Partington quotes  Judith Grisel, “The opposite of addiction … is not sobriety, but choice.”

Our choices become habits and our habits become compulsions. The natural learning process locks in the motivated repetition of certain behaviors. Suddenly, they are very difficult to unlearn. Compulsive sexual behaviors erode our freedom to choose.
